ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN I

PROJECTS 1 - 3: FORM, SPACE & ENCLOSURE

The aim of these projects was to develop the ideas of form, space and enclosure at a conceptual level. Form is a basic principle of architecture that allows the viewer to understand the intentions of the architect. The basic forms of the circle, square and the triangle are easily recognised, and can then undergo additive and subtractive processes to meet needs and/or develop the aesthetic of the object. Spaces can be defined in many ways and are explored in the second project through the use of minimal materials (dowels) that promote the pursuit of clarity. There are three spatial relationships: space within a space; space overlapping a space; space abutting a space. The third project explores the formation of spaces using simple planes. Spaces can be created that consist of four walls, a ceiling and a floor, or they can be defined in other ways. The relationship between the size of a space and its surrounding spaces can inform the viewer which family the space belongs to, its purpose and importance.
